The Guilt of InnocenceA Novel | |
|
In an imaginary Europe, where the concept of the Citizen has been replaced by that of the professional, two friends, an Artist and an Intellectual, undertake a curious mission: they are assigned as escorts of an innocent prisoner facing the deathpenalty. His trial takes place in public and the three of them soldier on towards the place of execution, crossing the Balkan Mountains, the Carpathian Mountains, the Alps and the Pyrenees. They are offered hospitality in castle-cities, theater-cities, sanatorium-cities, monastery-cities, library-cities and brothel-cities, all of which constitute a united criminal court. The entire population of Europe is one great body of jurors, who are called on to decide whether the defendant’s innocence is in truth aperverted form of guilt or if the uprightness of his judges is in truth an elegant form of calumny…
A work combining the road novel genre with elements of a political thriller and a gothic fairy tale. A fascinating trip through which the reader is confronted with two major questions: how dangerous can the certainties of a ‘well-governed’ democracy be, and where does the essence of political guilt orinnocence lie?
